By the house where I spent most of my childhood there was a pear tree. In our small back yard we grew apricots and raspberries but the pear tree stood to the side of the house and did not bear fruit every year, in fact it seldom bore fruit. Because the tree stood just outside of the areas most familiar, the areas where my childhood imagination roamed, I often forgot about the pear tree. During the years when there were pears it was exciting as they were to me so unexpected.
